Quest: Microsoft's Nadella explains why CEOs must have principles

When should CEOs get involved in public policy

Quest’s Profitable Moment

What’s the role of today’s CEO — besides running their own company? Barely a week goes by without a CEO taking a stand on the controversial issue de jour; the latest being the row over American football players protesting by kneeling during the national anthem, as well as President Trump calling them “sons of bitches” who should be fired.

var storytext = document.getElementById(‘storytext’);

console.log(“Error finding storytext element for SA embed”);

for ( i = 0; i 0)
heightToSkip -= storytext.childNodes[i].clientHeight;
else if(heightToSkip minHeight && targetChildElement != null)
//console.log(“total height = ” + totalHeight);
//console.log(“childNode = ” + targetChildElement);

storytext.childNodes[targetChildElement].insertAdjacentHTML(‘afterend’, smartAssetDiv);

Satya Nadella has been the CEO of Microsoft for three years. When he got the job, he was surprised at the range of non-tech issues he had to have official opinions about. “No CEO can just say I’m somehow not impacted by what’s happening in society,” Nadella told me.

Nadella as well as others at Microsoft have been very critical about the Trump administration’s travel ban against Muslim countries, the transgender bathroom battle, as well as the change in immigration rules in which will hurt “Dreamers.”

All of This particular fits into Nadella’s belief in which true leaders must celebrate “diversity as well as inclusion.” Nadella outlines This particular in his fresh book “Hit Refresh.”  When I pushed him to talk about how in which plays out in practice, Nadella told me CEOs “need to have a set of principles” in which could help protect existing values.

Of course, knowing when not to get involved will be just as tricky. Nadella will be well aware in which he as well as additional business leaders aren’t elected officials. “We’re CEOs of companies. For us to act as if we’re from the political arena would certainly also be a mistake,” he said.

Still, in which will be refreshing to meet a CEO in which has thought through these issues, will be prepared to take a stand as well as has the road map (or moral compass) to guide him. No wonder Microsoft will be doing so well. in which carries a leader in which knows what he will be doing, where he will be going as well as, crucially, why.

Crisis in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria

Hurricane Maria could cost Puerto Rico between $45 billion as well as $95 billion, according to one estimate. in which’s a staggering cost tag — especially considering the upper end of in which range will be comparable to a year’s worth of economic output by the U.S. territory.

Citizens are also facing a host of immediate problems, by cash shortages to sweltering, overflowing airports. Much of the region’s communications infrastructure remains offline. Once rebuilding begins, in which will be up to a mix of public as well as private groups to pick up the pieces.

Everyone knows Trump has serious gripes with China as well as Mexico on trade. yet tensions are at This particular point flaring with Canada, America’s No. 2 trade partner.

The Boeing-Bombardier battle will be already casting a shadow over ongoing talks to renegotiate NAFTA.

Saudi women finally are allowed to drive

saudi women drive

The ban on women driving will be set to be lifted in Saudi Arabia next year.

There are hopes in which more women will at This particular point take part from the Saudi workforce. in which could boost the kingdom’s economy as well as reduce the high level of gender inequality.

yet in which could hurt demand for the country’s 1.4 million chauffeurs. as well as in which may be a mixed bag for Uber as well as its Middle Eastern rival Careem, who have benefited by the ban since some women can’t afford private drivers.

Still, Uber as well as Careem may at This particular point be able to recruit more women as drivers.
